Salix triandra 'Whissender' is a very well known heritage basketry willow. It is grown in our willow beds predominantly for cuttings as Whissender does not grow well in our bioregion for basketry (it tends to get very branchy).
It is a softer willow, with less tension than a typical purpurea. It has a rich olive/tan fresh colour.
Black Maul can grow well for basketry other regions- (on the west coast for example). It's recommended that you do your own research/exercise diligence before purchasing to make sure that this variety is a right fit for you. (Check out the "All Things Willow" group on Facebook).
more information and photos to come
This variety can be great for basketry but we recommend checking with other growers in your region that may have experience using this willow before purchasing.
IMPORTANT NOTE FROM Johnny I am not a horticulturist and the information provided for each willow variety is based on my observations growing and using the willows here at Lakeshore Willows.
