Salix purpurea 'Polish Purple' is grown in our willow beds at Lakeshore Willows for basketry. It's a new variety available from our farms since 2024/2025, It grows abundantly, with many rods per plant (on par with our best basketry willows such as Salix x Americana, Bleu etc. This willow has nice tension, and works great in any part of a basket.

Description

  • This is a very abundant basketry willow
  • Grows long, flexible rods without branching
  • When soaked and dried the rods are a light olive green with blushes of pink
  • One of my favourite basket willows
  • Great for any part of a basket

Application

This variety is great for basketry and can also be used for living willow projects.

Bark for weaving can be harvested from 2-3 year old rods.

IMPORTANT NOTE FROM Johnny: I am not a horticulturist and the information provided for each willow variety is based on my observations growing and using the willows here at Lakeshore Willows.
